Ranching in the Yampa Valley

Emerald Mtn Ranch

Working Conservation & Turkish Boz Shepherd Guardians

Welcome to Emerald Mtn Ranch, located in the high country of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Our 700-acre mountain ranch is more than our home; it is the ultimate high-altitude proving ground for our working livestock guardian dogs.
While our roots stem from five generations of ranching, our core passion and mission today is conserving the Turkish Boz Shepherd as a functional, real-world working asset. We breed for stable temperment, functional guardians built to protect family homesteads, livestock, and children.

Preserving Authentic Instincts & Working Heritage

At Emerald Mtn Ranch, preserving the Turkish Boz Shepherd means safeguarding the natural instincts, athletic ability, and steady minds that have defined this breed for centuries. Our focus is centered on raising healthy, capable guardians that excel in real-world environments. We believe true breed conservation comes down to balancing four essential priorities:
Natural Stock Instincts: We foster innate guardian instincts from day one by raising our puppies in the heart of our multi-species ranch. Pups learn naturally alongside livestock, building confidence, spatial awareness, and proper stock respect under the guidance of proven adult dogs.
Functional Health & Sound Structure: A giant working guardian must be built to move effortlessly. We prioritize genetic health testing, structural balance, and functional movement over extreme bulk. Our goal is producing long-lived, agile dogs capable of patrolling large pastures and navigating rugged mountain terrain without physical strain.
Clear, Stable Temperaments: A true Boz Shepherd combines calm discernment with steady confidence. We select for dogs that can read real-world situations accurately offering a formidable presence against true threats while remaining patient, gentle, and trustworthy around family and children.
Real-World Proving Ground: Our dogs are raised and evaluated in high-altitude conditions with real weather extremes and surrounding predator pressure. This ensures every litter carries forward the practical workability needed for active homesteads and working ranches.

The Emerald Mtn Ranch Difference

Raised in the Thick of It
Our Boz Shepherds are not kennel-raised dogs. They are born directly into ranch life, living alongside cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry from day one. This early environment builds on their natural instincts, climate resilience, and clear judgment.
Gentle Souls, Bold Protectors
What sets the Boz apart is their extraordinary dual nature. Out in the pasture, they are a formidable force against apex predators. At home with their humans, especially children, they possess deeply tender, patient, and loving souls.
Advocacy, Research & Education
A guardian dog is only as good as the knowledge behind it. We actively collaborate with USDA programs, research entities, and advocacy groups to advance predator management and provide ongoing public education regarding the purpose and use of livestock guardian dogs .

The Stanko Legacy: Five Generations of High-Country Ranching

Since 1907, our family has stewarded the same 700 acres in the Yampa Valley of Northwest Colorado. We don’t just live on the land; we are a part of it. For over a century, Emerald Mtn Ranch has survived the challenges of high-altitude ranching, and that century of experience is built into every aspect of our operation.
